Monday's headlines

Happy Monday, everyone. Turner here. We at Argyle Report are excited about starting on our third week, and we're thrilled to have you along for the ride.

Here's what we've got for you today:

Last night in Cary, Carolina men's soccer unofficially opened the 2017-18 athletic year with a 3-1 exhibition win over Coastal Carolina. The nation's fourth-ranked team controlled the run of a play and ground out a win. I was there on a nice night at WakeMed Soccer Park for photos and a story

On Friday, we heard from Bryce Lapping in the band column, as he wrote about traveling with Tar Heel men's basketball on their run to the national title in March and April

And Will Bryant gave us an appreciation of Mack Hollins after a nice night by the former Tar Heel.

Later today, we'll have Sam Doughton's Q and A with volleyball's Holly Carlton, who was on the U.S. Women's Junior National Team that won the Pan American Cup in May. And I promise I'll have my story on Marie McCool, who won two gold medals this summer with U.S. Women's Lacrosse. Additionally, with football practice open today, we'll have photos and a practice report.

Thanks for reading Argyle A.M. today and every weekday!

Big in Brewster

Kyle Datres, Zack Gahagan and the Brewster Whitecaps are the 2017 Cape Cod Baseball League Champions. Gahagan hit .220 in 20 games this summer for the Whitecaps, while Datres hit .225 in 32 games.

King keeps his throne

Former Tar Heel point guard King Rice received a five-year extension to remain the head coach at Monmouth University through the 2021-22 season. Rice is 106-92 over six seasons as the Hawks' coach but was 55-15 over the last two seasons.

Calling Switz's shot

Dez Bryant said that Cowboys teammate Ryan Switzer will return "four or five" kicks for touchdowns in his rookie season. Five kickoff return touchdowns would tie the single-season record, while five punt return touchdowns would break it. So, we'll see.

More on Mack

Will Bryant wasn't the only writer impressed with Mack Hollins' NFL debut. Marc Sessler says Mack "put on a show" in his first game as a Philadelphia Eagle.

No Go Gio

Though he has been cleared to return to action, Giovani Bernard did not play in the Cincinnati Bengals' preseason opener on Friday. Gio should play later in the preseason.

Daily Diversion

Well, isn't this fun? The Shelby Star featured Argyle Report writer David Ray Allen and his brother Michael, who are serving as the public address announcers at the American Legion World Series
