After going 1-1 in their opening weekend, the Carolina Women’s Basketball squad was looking to keep it going with a second straight win against the Radford Highlanders Thursday night.
SPOILER ALERT: They won. By a lot.
The Tar Heels jumped out to an early 17 to 9 lead in the 1st period of play, led by the hot-shooting trio of Paris Kea, Taylor Koenen and Janelle Bailey. After this, it was all Carolina. Their first half lead got up to as many as 18 points after the Highlanders didn’t score a point for more than 11 minutes. This quarter-long scoring slump can be traced back to Radford’s 22 turnovers and incredibly poor shooting (just 23 percent from the field at halftime).
The second half wasn’t much different, although the Heels did give up a short run in the 3rd period that led to the lead being cut to 11. This didn’t last very long though and Carolina extended their lead to 20 by the end of the quarter.
Despite Janelle Bailey’s dominating performance, putting up 19 points and 10 rebounds, the MVP for this game has to go to sophomore Emily Sullivan. Sullivan scored 11 points in a row to finish the game and added in a great block.
This was a win that the team needed, looking to erase any early bad thoughts about the opening weekend. If the Heels can keep up a defensive mentality like this and focus on team ball, there is a lot to look forward to this season.
